Hi everyone my name is Eric Seropyan and this is my first ever podcast. I’ve been meaning to one for a while and figured today is as good of a day as ever. Depending on how my experience goes and how enjoyable it is, this might be my last podcast or it might be the first of many. You guys are all experiencing something that’s on my bucket list, we will see how it goes.
On a bit of sad news my dad has been in the hospital for about 10 days now. We’ve been pretty much living in the hospital room over in the South Bay and the doctors have been telling that he’s going to be released, it’s now been 10 days. Today is no different, they’re telling us that he will be released. I literally came straight from the hospital to do this podcast, I didn’t want to cancel my appointment. Once I finish my recording, I will go back to the hospital. So if I’m stumbling or whatever, I’m winging it and fingers crossed for my dad.
I wanted to do this podcast and see the experience of it. To see if I like it, if I’m good at it. If I like it, I want to do more of these. So I have some passions I want to talk about. One thing being where I live. I live in the South Bay region of Los Angeles. I’m somewhat of an influencer in the area. I know a lot of small businesses. I’ve grown up and live in the South Bay. I’m passionate about where I live, the activities, the beach, swimming, surfing and everything in the area that I’ll be talking about in the South Bay. One of my other passions is marketing. I have a background in marketing. I’m looking to put things out there about trends in marketing. I’d love to hear back from people, I’d love to learn and have people share their knowledge. We are not in competition with each other, we can learn from one another. One of the ways that I’m looking to do this will be by posting my podcasts on Youtube.
If there are things that you want to that you have questions about, hopefully others will give a helpful comment. For example we might have someone that has a Twitter question, and I might reply. However somebody out there might have a better solution to the question. So if you post it there, everybody will be able to see. That way we can try different things and see what’s working, and share with one another and help each other.
I’m a big fan of sports so will be talking about sports for sure. I already have small businesses and individuals lined up for guest speakers. So depending on how it goes I am looking forward to having guest speakers. But I really right now I just kinda want to find my “voice”. See if I’m any good at this and then at that point, when I knock out a couple of these podcasts, then we can start to have guest speakers.
Within the South Bay area I have a digital marketing company called This Is My South Bay. I have over 30,000 followers within the area. It’s either people that I’ve geo-targeted that live within a specific radius, or they’re interested in the subject of marketing. A majority of these people are staunch followers, they direct message me a lot with thoughts and questions. We keep in touch and know a lot of small businesses. This will be the next trend in marketing, geo-targeting and really going after an audience within an area. This is something that I know and in time I will be able to share that with people and have them implement it within their business.
A couple of things that I don’t want to talk about on this podcast. Anything to do with religion or politics. Anything that’s gonna be coming up negative with any other subject matter. I don’t want to get into that here. I have my opinion on things but this podcast will not be for that. So today is kind of a big day, for the past week or so we’ve been, well I’m married to someone from Mexico, Mexico City to be specific. She is big on the world cup. A couple of days ago, it was a big day in our house when Mexico beat Germany in world cup action. Every day seems to be a big deal. About five o’clock in the morning I hear “NO MAMES” in the other room. That’s how I know that something happened with a soccer ball somewhere in Russia and my wife is going crazy in the other room. It’s a big deal around the world, I know that a lot of my friends that live in the states don’t follow it all that much. Right now as I’m Googling the numbers, it’s telling me when I Google “how many people watch the super bowl”, it’s saying that about 111 million people within the United States watched the super bowl. It’s saying that the number is higher in the U.S. and the numbers drastically drop off when you go outside of the U.S. Whereas the number of people watching the world cup is about 3.2 billion. Now that’s for a month, it started a couple of days ago and it goes for about a month. Right now they’re playing 3 to 4 games per day. And if you do the math, the super bowl is one game at 111 million people and the world cup is 3.2 billion ongoing. As you can imagine it’s a big deal around the world. So the next big match coming up for Mexico is against South Korea. I got my Mexico jersey and pretty pumped about it. I know the players and getting really excited about the whole thing. Hopefully, if you’re not into it, give it a chance. It’s just you have to record it or whatever because it’s at off hours. You just see the passion because people have flown out and paid ridiculous amounts of money for flights and hotels and everything. Plus they waited four years for this one month of soccer. As a matter of fact my wife is texting me letting me know that Argentina is losing to Croatia. It’s like one o’clock in the afternoon here in Los Angeles and she’s working, and following the games. Argentina losing to Croatia is a big deal also. I think Germany was a shock that the world has been talking about and I’d hate to the next team that Germany plays because I think Germany is just gonna kill them.
I want to talk briefly about Instagram and some of the new features coming up. If you’re a business owner, it would be of interest to you. One of the features is that you can now schedule your posts on Instagram. So let’s say you are, I don’t know a restaurant. You can take seven pictures and post one week worth of posts. So you don’t have to be dealing with that all the time. You make your posts with comments, hashtags and schedule when you want it to post. Then forget about it. That seems to be a big deal. Before you would have to get on other platforms to do that, and it was usually a paid platform.
Another feature that Instagram come out with, I think this was in March. When you go on your phone to see what’s new, the newest content comes up first on your feed. Before this, they had an algorithm to figure to figure out what content someone would be more interesting to you. Whereas now, let’s say I just posted five seconds ago, then you can see my post immediately purely based on what’s posted most currently. So now it’s more of a level playing field because maybe you’ve never seen my posts and now you will be able to see it, and hopefully, it would be interesting to you.
I think that the big thing Instagram is doing is that Instagram is fixated on what Snapchat is doing. A great way to get your message out is on Instagram stories. Once you post it, the post goes away in 24 hours. So you have 24 hours to do as many stories as they want. There are a lot of tools such as location, gifs etc. Obviously, don’t go overboard and do 20 stories a day. But you could do a post every other day and a story every day. If you’re a business, you can do a story and put the exact landing page on the story post. So let’s say you’re selling a jacket, you can put the exact landing page for that product. So there’s some really exciting stuff going on with Instagram. I think can take up a lot of time to go over Instagram and make sure everyone understands and optimize their accounts.
