Events in the South Bay

Hi, everybody, this is Eric Seropyan and I’m returning for my second podcast. I have to say, the first one wasn’t as traumatic and I survived it. It was actually pretty fun although it’s not normal sitting in a room talking to myself. Those are signs of someone that is not too stable but within a couple of minutes I adjusted and felt more comfortable.

The part that I loathed was listening to myself afterward. I’ve always known that I’m not going to be a singer with this voice. Listening to myself was a mild version of agony and torture. It’s one of those things that you think that you sound different. Then you hear yourself on audio, voicemail whatever, and you ask if you really sound like that. Then your friends say, yeah you sound just like that. I came out of it unscathed and am looking to do more. For those of you looking to get into podcasting, as the saying goes…just do it. And I’m here just doing it.

Today was an exciting day, Mexico played Sweden in the world cup. I’m actually still wearing my Mexico futbal jersey. I’ve been going to meetings with it, and later on today I’m going to the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce meeting wearing it. I’m proud of it, it was a big deal for Mexico to move to the next round. Even though they lost to Sweden they were able to advance in the playoffs. It was an awesome morning for me, having a great day and hopefully, you’re having a great day as well.

Events in the South Bay

I wanted to talk about some of the events coming up in the South Bay this weekend. If you’re into bbq’s, fireworks, outdoor movies then this is the weekend for you. LA is a place where you can see everything. You wanna see a high school musical or do you want to see a world famous performer. Every weekend it seems like there’s something to do and this weekend is an amazing time for that. It seems like this weekend is special because it’s the birthday of America.

As it turns out this 4th of Julys lands on a Wednesday. What do you do? Do you take off the days leading up to the 4th, or do you take Wednesday and on? Or do you pretend that you’re European and take all nine days off. I had actually Googled “how many days of from work does a person take by country”. European is averaging 35 paid days off per year. Which if you consider 5 days a week at 52 weeks, that comes out to about every 7th work day off. I think that’s pretty good. I’m on Wiki’s website now and for some reason the United States is coming up as zero. It’s showing no days off, but we do have 4th of July off and other holidays off. It’s saying that there isn’t a statutory minimum or public holidays. So if you can pretend that you’re European, just take all nine days off.

I wanted to mention a couple of things going on in the area. I’ll be talking about things that are happening in The South Bay area. There are all kinds of events and happenings all around Los Angeles. From OC to Riverside to the San Fernando Valley, everyone is celebrating the birthday for America. However I’ll be focusing on just the South Bay.

Starting on Friday, which is an ongoing thing, they have movie night around 8pm when the sun sets. Right around the Redondo Beach pier, bring your chairs and blankets.

Saturday the 30th is the birthday of the city of Lomita. They have some celebrations going on with games, food, entertainment with it ending with a fireworks show at Lomita Park. For more details go to lomita.com/cityhall

The next event that they have in Lomita is the Lomita Craft Beer Festival which is within the area of the Lomita celebration. The Beer Festival is 5pm-9pm.

Movies in the park in Torrance will be starting around 8pm. Usually outdoor movies start at sunset, lately it’s been setting later than 8 o’clock so keep that in mind. Go to their website www.summermoviesinthepark.com

Moving to Sunday, July 1st, if you’re gonna be in Redondo Beach you might want to check out if you’re into pool parties and stuff like that, you can check out the Shade Hotel pool party. It’s gonna be 1pm-6pm get more info at rb.shadehotel.com and reserve your space. Then right after that 6pm-9pm, there will be another event. Then at 9pm, you can watch the fireworks. So you can spend your whole day right there.

I used to go to the Palace Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach. It’s right by Ruby’s there across the street from Crowne Plaza Hotel. This place has ocean water in a closed environment in a pool. So if you want ocean water without dealing with the ocean elements like sharks, waves, fish etc, you can go there. Seaside Lagoon Independence Day Celebration is a family party type of a thing. They start at 2pm and goes on for a while. You can bring chairs and everything, but no alcohol. It’s promoted as a family event so if you have kids and want a safe place where they can swim and whatever, that’s probably a good place for you. They’re located at 200 Portofino Way in Redondo Beach.

Also on Monday there’s a Beach Cities health District event from July 2nd to July 23rd every Monday at 630pm at the Manhattan Beach Pier. For more info go to bchd.org/fitness They’re having free fitness and yoga sessions. I like that they’re trying to take care of people before they end up in the hospital. It’s better to help them take care of themselves before they get ill.

Moving on to July 3rd, not much going on.

Then on the 4th of July there’s all kinds of stuff going on. I’ll start with the morning. 4th of July 5k Run and Firecracker Dash is put on by Village Runner which is located in the Riviera Village in Redondo Beach. The event starts at 8 am and for info go to www.villagerunner.com

There’s this guy I’ve never met him but I always see him on social media, his name is G.I. Joe and he has a push up challenge. If you see his picture, he looks like he can do 1,000 push ups, he’s really fit. He’s doing something where the challenge has a $1,000 prize. Go to www.mbbootcamp.com for info. It’s saying that Village Runner is involved in this so they have a couple of things going on. Also that day from 11am-5pm in Rancho Palos Verdes, they’re having a celebration culminating in a fireworks show. It’s at Point Vicente, which is almost at the end of Hawthorne Blvd at Terranea. Go to rpvca.gov for more info.

If you want to stay in that area there’s “Music at the Meadows” at Terranea. It’s a place that is right next to Jimmy’s Restaurant at Terranea. If you’ve never been, it’s one of the prettier places and a fun event. If you want to hang out at Terranea this would be a good time to go. Go to Terranea’s website for more info.

If you want to venture to other places, there are plenty of places to see fireworks for 4th of July. There’s the one at Gardena, they have a party going on at Rowley Park starting at 5 o’clock. You can bring your stuff and they have food trucks etc and then you can watch the fireworks show.

At El Segundo they’ll be having a fireworks show, again a celebration before leading up to the fireworks show. You just need to choose where you want to watch the show. Live music starts around 5 o’clock and then the fireworks should start around 9pm. Go to www.elsegundo.org for more info.

There was a place that I used to go a lot called Rat Beach. Because you could see firework shows from Rat Beach to Redondo to Hermosa all the way to Santa Monica and across the bay to Malibu. But I don’t see the info about it, so I would check into it before going because they might not have it this year.

The last one is the firework show in Torrance, the city of Torrance it putting it on. For more info go to www.torranceca.com. That’s just in the South Bay, I know I’m missing some. We are really lucky to be living here, there’s so much to do all the time or you can choose to do nothing.

In the future if you want to get the word out, go to my website www.thisismysouthbay.com . If you have an event that you are passionate about or if you want to connect with me for something else. Everybody have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend. Until next time.
